A couple of months ago while flipping through my favorite clothing magazine, I found so many cute outfits I had to have. Every new page there was some shoe, shirt or accessory that was screaming my name. The more pages I reviewed, the more excited I got with anticipation of how I would look in THAT outfit. I was about to literally “bust” with excitement so I quickly grabbed my lab top to buy some of those clothes I had fallen in love with. That is until I noticed HOW MUCH what I wanted was going to be. Sigh… I needed a “side hustle” and fast.
I quickly thought in my head what I was good at but nothing screamed “money maker”. I am not friendly enough to work retail, I’m too old to throw newspapers, I can’t sing and I have no patience to tutor children when I have three of my own to take care of. The only thing that I could think that I was good at, was writing.
But the question remained… Could I really make money from writing?
Not only can I make money from writing but I could basically set my own hours to work!
Anyone who has been reading this blog, you know I am planner. So instead of me blindly trying to find jobs, I developed a plan.
I began to research writing, editing, copy editing jobs around the web. I looked at the skills listed in job posts and decided this would be a good “fit” for me and my family and my wallet.
I then began to frequent job websites for freelance artists and quickly developed several profiles around the web so that potential clients could find me.
Next, I developed a website for me to advertise my talents. (Inbox me and I’ll send you my professional writing blog info)
Finally I began to apply to all kinds of jobs–no matter how small.
Fast forward to today, and I have a fledgling career of being a freelance writer, editor, copy editor. I have written for several magazine, blogs and academic settings and one day in the near future I will have my own column in global magazine. Inspired by my small success, I’ve even started my company dedicated to me proofing documents for a variety of clients.
What are my goals for the near future? Within the next 6 months, I will be even more established and may be able to “snag” some ghost writing jobs!
